When the Dot NET universal domain extension was initially introduced in 1985, together with the first domains on the web, it was planned to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure organizations. Taking into account that there were no particular conditions about the usage of the TLD, though, .NET domains were registered and used for different purposes and by loads of people. This domain extension represents an ideal substitute of dot COM, especially if the necessary domain with the latter extension is not free for registration.
