If a particular page on an Internet site doesn't load for some reason or in case a link is not functioning, the visitor will see an error page with a generic message. The page will have nothing in common with the rest of the site, that could make the visitor leave the website. A likely solution in such a case is a function made available from some web hosting companies - the ability to set your own custom error pages that shall have identical design and style as your website and which may contain any text or images you want depending on the specific error. There are four popular errors which could occur and they involve these so-called HTTP status codes - 400, when your web browser sends a bad request to the web server and it can't be processed; 401, if you're supposed to log in to see a webpage, but you haven't done so yet; 403, if you do not have a permission to view a particular page; and 404, if a link which you have clicked leads to a file which doesn't exist. In each of these scenarios, website visitors shall be able to see your custom content rather than a generic error page.

Custom Error Pages in Shared Website Hosting

The custom made error pages feature is provided with each shared website hosting package which we offer and you shall be able to substitute all the generic pages with your own with no more than several clicks inside your Hepsia website hosting CP. You shall have to develop the actual files and to upload them to your account, and then to set them for a particular domain or subdomain using the Hosted Domains section of the Hepsia Control Panel. You may do this for every single site hosted in the account separately, so that every group of custom made pages shall have the exact same style and design as the website it is part of. If required, you could always revert back to a default page from our system or to a default Apache server page. An alternate way to set personalized error pages is to create an .htaccess file in the domain/subdomain root folder and to add a few lines in it. If you haven't done this before, you can simply copy the necessary code from our Help article on this subject.

Custom Error Pages in Semi-dedicated Servers

All of our semi-dedicated plans support custom error pages, so you shall be able to employ this function for each and every domain or subdomain hosted inside your account. All it will take to do this is to go to the Hosted Domains section of the Hepsia Control Panel, to click on the Edit button related to the particular domain/subdomain and to enter the link to the custom file. You can do this separately for each error type. You will be able to switch back to a generic error page at any time if necessary and the change will take effect straightaway. Another way to get the exact same result is to place an .htaccess file inside the domain or subdomain folder of the web site which you would like to modify and to enter several lines of program code in it. If you would like to try this method, you may copy and paste the needed code from our Knowledge Base article on custom error pages, so you shall not need any coding skills or prior experience.
