Secure Shell, also known as SSH, is a cryptographic network protocol that is used to execute commands on a remote web server or to exchange data between a hosting server and a client. As the information exchanged by the two sides is protected, a third party simply cannot intercept it, which makes SSH a favored means of handling a website hosting account. The commands that could be executed depend on the type of hosting service. On a shared hosting server, for example, the choices are limited as you won't have root access to the website hosting server, so you may only create/move/delete files, set up and unpack archives, export and import databases, and so on. These are all actions that are executed within the shared hosting account and don't require a higher level of access. Through a virtual or a dedicated server, you will have the ability to set up server-side software or to restart the hosting server or just a particular service (web server, database server, etc.). SSH commands are submitted via a command line, but if you do not use a UNIX-like Operating System, there are plenty of apps for other OSs, that you can employ to connect to the remote hosting server as well.
